Aachen celebrates its first World Usability Day at RWTH Aachen University.

Prof. Jan Borchers, head of the Media Computing Group at RWTH Aachen University, has been an advocate of promoting usability and user-centered design for many years. He has been teaching Human-Computer Interaction since 1995, for Siemens, at Stanford, at ETH, and since 2003 at RWTH Aachen University. During the World Usability Day 2006 for the first time, he offered insights into the topic in the course of a seminar to business practitioners.

The seminar was divided into two parts: At first, the fundamentals of designing for usability were covered including an introduction to cognitive psychology and the historical development. Then after a short break, the user-centered design process was introduced, and methods of prototyping and evaluation were explained. All lectures were accompanied with reading suggestions to gain further insight into the topic. The main purpose of the event was to provide an introduction to the topic and create an awareness of the problem of inadequate usability.
